Disability Income Insurance
In the many years The Rauser Agency has been working with employers as benefits planners, one situation seems to repeat itself with disturbing regularity. An employee is out of work for a couple of weeks. Then a month or two goes by and finally the business owner calls and asks us, what should be done; can the health insurance be cancelled? Well, we'll answer, what is your policy on such matters? What does your Employee Handbook say?

It's hard on everyone when an employee is out of work. It is far more difficult if there have been no well established and communicated policies and procedures for such situations. We'll work with you to set firm guidelines. It may be decided to end employment after only a short time - consistent with employment laws. Terminating an employee and offering them COBRA, while never pleasant, is so much easier if it is not a surprise! And, if short or long term disability income insurance is in place to supplant the lost income. When the employer cannot afford to sponsor a disability plan, then we have voluntary plans individuals may elect as needed.

Short term disability plans pay flat weekly benefits for 13 or 26 weeks after waiting periods of less than two weeks; long term disability plans often sync with the short term coverage beginning after 90 or 180 days and paying out benefits to age 65 based on earned income.
